Dealing With Change

July 13, 2010

The only constant in life is change, so it’s likely that you’ve experienced it many times.

Though we all go through periods of change, some embrace it and deal with it quite effectively, while others suffer from “transition anxiety” and find themselves completely derailed by the shifts and surprises that life dishes out, which leaves them feeling uncertain about how to approach a new situation, and the future as a whole.

The following are some ideas for coping with change and channeling it into a pleasurable, life-enhancing phenomenon.

  1. Accept Uncertainty. Many people fear the uncertain because they associate it with a negative, maybe even life-threatening, situation. In many cases, uncertainty is a sign of better things to come. Prepare for both desirable and undesirable scenarios so you’ll have an idea of what to expect when the unexpected arrives.
  1. Look Forward to the Future. We can’t change the past, so we have to accept it, learn from what has happened, and move forward. Looking ahead to the future means setting goals – and setting goals means working toward your dreams. As long as you’re moving in the direction of your dreams, how can the future be anything to dread?
  2. Pay Attention to Your Surroundings. Once you recognize that change can occur at any time, look for subtle clues that change could be on the horizon in your own specific situation. For example, has management been handing out an increasing number of pink slips? If so, it might be a good time to take a class that would increase your value in the eyes of your employer.
  3. Communication is Key. Don’t just sit back and wait for things to happen. When you’re standing on the threshold of imminent change, communicate with others to learn the nature of the change and what you can do to better adapt to it.

Change Requires Flexibility.

In the face of change, think about what skills and lessons from your old role or situation you can apply to the new circumstances.  In the event that your new situation calls for a different skill set or new lessons, be open to learning those things.

Boosting Your Wealth

July 12, 2010

Some might think it unfathomable to be considering ways to become wealthy in the midst of a recession, but there is never a bad time to try to leverage your talents and resources in an effort to boost your net worth.

Even in the face of market volatility, and even if you don’t foresee a salary increase in the next few years, there are some things you can do to build upon your wealth, most of which start with simply changing your way of thinking.

First and foremost, try and think of your wealth as the sum total of your decisions to date. Think about that long and hard.  No one but you is responsible for your wealth – or lack thereof.

Where you find yourself today is the total of your efforts and decisions since you were equipped with the brainpower to execute such things.  Get excited and make some new decisions today.

Decide to build up a massive desire for that which you want most for your life.  Your desire for happiness will bring you happiness, just as your desire for wealth will bring you wealth.

Once your mind is made up, the desire will translate into a tremendous amount of extra energy and brainpower, which will be needed to accomplish your desired outcome.

It may help to narrow your focus and simplify your strategies by breaking your ultimate goal down into a number of smaller goals.  Map out a path to that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Maintain your focus, and make a conscious decision to dominate anything that best exploits your skills and talents.  You might find that it helps to study the decision-making processes of your mentors, and other folks you admire for their success. Find out why they make their decisions the way they do.

Finally, remember that indecision can breed failure.  Welcome to Earth, where you are doomed to make choices.

Take time to get centered – discover the stillness and truth of your own fabulous being. Look inward deeply. Be ruthlessly honest. Clear away limiting ideas about yourself and your world. When you do, you’ll gain freedom to make better choices.

Lost and Found Motivation

June 27, 2010

As children, your motivation is dangled in front of you by your parents. Either you got something of desire if you complied, or perhaps you faced punishment if you did not do as you were asked.

Of course, your motivation for getting up and going to work every day is at least the paycheck at the end of the week, but hopefully you also go for the satisfaction you get from your job. Maybe not.

Maybe you find yourself going through the motions of life with no real desire to go above and beyond at work, no interest in cleaning out the messy garage, and no desire to write those thank you letters.

Sometimes motivation challenges are larger than menial tasks. Do you have a goal untouched? A project unfinished? A life unfulfilled? Whatever it is, let these 6 tips guide you on your way to finding the motivation and getting your life on track

1. Take it from your parents. When your parents would offer to let you have a new toy, or take the car Saturday night if you performed certain tasks, it certainly inspired you to do what was asked of you, didn’t it? Likewise, you can incentivize yourself to complete tedious tasks by creating a reward for yourself. Boxes of papers to file? Get a manicure afterwards.  Cleaning out the garage? Pick out something fun to put in it. Whatever you decide, make the reward as big as the effort, and you’ll find yourself working towards the goal a lot quicker.

2.Break it down. Some of our lack of motivation comes from being overwhelmed by the goal or project. Does obtaining your PhD seem too daunting? The piles of boxes too massive to tackle? Do you want to change careers but aren’t sure how? Identify the end result, and then break the workload down into sizeable, manageable chunks. This is a key component of feeling motivated to stay on target. Find out what’s entailed in getting your PhD and set a plan for when you can accomplish all these things. Put the plan somewhere visible, so you don’t forget.

3. Set a reasonable goal. I want to lose 30 pounds in two weeks, get the corner office by next month and be debt free in three months. None of these are very realistic goals, and it’s likely that you will not be able to accomplish them. When this happens, it erodes our overall motivation, and leaves us feeling like failures. Its better to set goals you can achieve. Such as: I’d like to focus on my health so I can start losing weight, or I want to be debt free in 3-5 years. Then you can take the steps and be successful.

4. Make it fun! Getting that PhD will be so much more exciting if you budget in some time for a couple of extra classes that you will enjoy, and tackling that pile of papers will be more satisfying in front of a movie. Whatever you do, when you set out to tackle big projects and lofty goals, make each step rewarding in the moment by making it fun, entertaining, or interesting. Time will fly, and you will look forward to taking on your chores.

5.  Just do it. That’s right, just jump in and do it.  Sometimes, we waste too much time thinking, planning, and bemoaning our lack of motivation or energy. Sometimes it just takes a little resolve. Even if you don’t know where to begin, beginning somewhere – anywhere – will help you get on your way and will likely help you identify the steps you need to take to accomplish your mission. Before you know it, you’ll have achieved what it was you set out to do.

6. Get help. Getting experienced professionals to help you learn what motivates you and getting the expert advice you need to achieve your goals can be critical in getting things done. Talk to debt counseling services, a fitness coach, or nutritionist to get help in succeeding in your goals, and talk to a lifestyle design coach to find the resolve to achieve your dreams.

Practice makes perfect, and finding motivation is no exception. The more you treat yourself well and make your goals and projects enjoyable, the more motivated you will be for the next project, and you’ll be much happier in the process!

Tips for Living In the Moment

June 27, 2010

If your sense of peace and contentment comes from what you own, or what goals and achievements you have created throughout your life, then it is time to stop and take a look around you. We are human beings, not human “doings” or human “havings”.

Yet, despite existing as human beings, we often let the art of “being” escape us. Think about the last time you had “nothing to do”. How did you feel? Bored, restless, fidgety, anxious, worried, or depressed?

Many of us do feel this type of stress when faced with spare time. We often fill this time however we can, avoiding at all costs the anxiety of being present in the moment. Living in the moment can feel tricky to master, because of the discomfort that can arise when we push all our thoughts and worries to the side. Here are some steps to living in the moment, or what I call the Clarity Mind State.

1. Spend time alone every day. Spend it in meditation, or yoga, prayer or Tai chi. Spend this time without “doing”, and without thinking. When thoughts arise, simply release them, and let them go on their way. Doing this will allow you to witness the frenzied behavior of the mind. The pace of the mind so furious and fast, demanding that you strive to take action to find happiness.

2. Find the simple things that are around you, yet are striking in some way. The saying “stop and smell the roses” reflects this simple joy. The simple things are easy to find: birds singing from the trees, lightning flashing across the sky, or the bright moon on a dark night. There are many joys around you, you have only to look.

3. Be present in conversation. Listen completely to each person, taking in all their words and expressions. Many of us simply “wait to talk” or try to assume to know the other person’s meaning. Listen without thinking about what you will say or finishing sentences. Don’t anticipate another person’s words. Listening is a rare skill these days. It takes practice, and is enhanced considerably by having a quiet, still mind.

4. We are told that we create everything in our life. Whether you believe that or not, believe that you can alter your perspective. Start by accepting what is, and not pining for what isn’t. What is happening right now in your life is what is happening, and no amount of emotion will change the present moment, only the future. Every moment has many perspectives. There is opportunity in misfortune, and there can be joy in the end of something. Sometimes, it may take effort, and determination to see the silver lining – but it is there.

It is difficult for most people to find stillness of the mind. To find meaning in a single moment, free of the material constraints of our current world, and free of the need for achieving, doing, and having, then we have found a miracle within ourselves, and an entirely new world of opportunities will begin to open as a result.
